No Diet Liquid Protein The College Years - Staying in Shape.
The Freshman 15 is not a myth-it happens. For many, it is more like the Freshman 20. While dorm food certainly leaves much to be desired, there are alternatives college students can make which help develop good, healthy habits for life.
First, see about any dieting options available. Perhaps your dorm has a stove on one floor, or an ability to add a small fridge to your room. It is highly advisable that if you are allowed to utilize a fridge, take the opportunity! You can store fresh fruits and veggies to eat while studying, and store yogurt and milk for breakfast. Also, stoves are often found on at least one dorm room floor. This way you can quickly heat up a dinner that isn't found on a buffet line.
Second, always store some healthy snacks for when pulling an all-nighter or late-night study session. These include low calorie popcorn and granola bars for when carb craving occurs and protein bars and chocolate protein shakes when you are craving something sweet. This rules out the temptation to spend your quarters on the vending machine-save those quarters for your laundry.
Third, walk! College is a great time to get in a lot of exercise. When you hit the real world, you often sit behind a desk pushing a pencil or typing a keyboard. But while you are going to school, you walk to your classes, walk to the grocery store, etc. Take advantage of every opportunity you have to just walk to class and when you do your errands.
Fourth, cut the liquid calories in half. Alcohol doesn't have to play a big part of your life. While it is fun for some, the day after isn't and burning off the extra calories isn't either.
And lastly, form workout buddies. College is the best opportunity you have in life to meet people so easily...classes, study sessions, at the college gym, at the local dives around campus...there are students literally everywhere. Therefore, as you make new friends, ask them to join you for a weight lifting session or jog around campus. Having someone hold you accountable for working out will make you do it and will make it fun.
